here has been a delicious aroma wafting through the corridors lately, and it isn’t just coming from the canteen. This term, students across all year groups have been immersing themselves in the world of culinary arts, taking their skills far beyond the mixing bowl.
Beyond the Kitchen with Katy
While our wonderful cooking teacher, Katy, has been guiding the children through the fundamentals of knife safety and heat control, the students have taken the baton and run with it. They haven't just been following recipes—they’ve been designing them.
The Ultimate Pasta Challenge
The highlight of the term has been our "Signature Pasta" project. Students were tasked with creating their own unique pasta dishes from scratch. This wasn't just about picking a sauce; the children looked at the "Farm to Fork" journey, considering every eventuality of their creation:
-
Sourcing: Discussing where seasonal ingredients come from and the importance of local farming.
-
Nutrition: Balancing proteins, carbohydrates, and "hidden veg" to create a healthy fuel source.
-
Aesthetics: Plating their dishes with an eye for colour and texture—true MasterChef style!
-
Costing: Our older students even considered the budget for their ingredients, ensuring their dishes were both delicious and sustainable.
Skills for Life
Cooking is one of the most vital life skills we can teach, fostering independence, fine motor skills, and even a bit of practical chemistry. Seeing the children's faces light up as they taste a sauce they designed themselves is a testament to their hard work and creativity.
We look forward to seeing (and smelling!) what our young chefs cook up next.
