Black Curriculum

This week, our Year 5 and 6 classrooms were buzzing with energy as we hosted an inspiring Black Curriculum workshop. Far from a standard history lesson, this was an interactive deep dive into the rich, diverse threads of global history that often go untold.

A Journey Beyond the Textbook

The students didn't just sit and listen—they became historians. The workshop focused on the pre-colonial brilliance of African kingdoms and the profound impact of the Windrush generation on modern British culture. It was a joy to see our pupils making connections between the past and the world they see around them today.

Thinking Critically, Contributing Loudly

What stood out most was the maturity and curiosity of our students. They didn't shy away from the big questions. Whether they were discussing the intricate bronze work of the Kingdom of Benin or the social contributions of Black British icons, their contributions were insightful and empathetic.

"I didn't know that there were such advanced cities in Africa hundreds of years ago. It changed how I think about history!" — Year 6 Student

Why It Matters

By exploring these narratives, our students are developing a more complete picture of the world. This workshop wasn't just about dates and facts; it was about:

  • Representation: Seeing the contributions of all people celebrated.

  • Critical Thinking: Questioning whose stories get told and why.

  • Community: Understanding the shared history that builds our local neighborhood.

We are incredibly proud of how Year 5 and 6 represented our school. Their enthusiasm proves that when we broaden the curriculum, we broaden the minds of our future leaders.

 Cool Moves

If you’ve noticed a little extra spring in our students' steps lately, there’s a good reason for it. This term, PE has taken an adventurous turn as all year groups have started our brand-new Parkour unit.

Move over traditional gymnastics—our playground and hall have been transformed into urban obstacle courses where movement knows no bounds!

From "Bounces" to "Big Landings"

From our Year 1 and 2 learners to our Year 6 leaders, the enthusiasm has been off the charts. Parkour is all about moving from point A to point B as efficiently (and creatively) as possible. Our students have been busy mastering:

  • Precision Jumps: Learning how to land softly and safely on targets.

  • The "Lazy Vault": Navigating over benches with newfound flow and grace.

  • Creative Wall Runs: Using our equipment to find new heights and angles.

  • Dynamic Bounces: Developing the "rebound" strength needed to keep moving.

More Than Just Moves

What makes Parkour so special is that it isn’t just about the "cool" factor—though there is plenty of that! It’s a fantastic way for children to build functional strength, spatial awareness, and resilience.

"It feels like being a superhero! You have to plan your path and then just go for it." — Year 4 Student

We’ve been particularly impressed by the problem-solving on display. If a student can’t clear an obstacle one way, they don’t give up; they find a different "line" or a new move to get the job done.

Safety First

While it looks high-energy, our coaches have been focusing heavily on the "landing" phase. We are teaching the children that the most important part of a big jump isn't the height—it's the silent, controlled landing that protects their joints and keeps them ready for the next move.

From Farm to Fork: Our Budding Chefs Take the Lead!

here has been a delicious aroma wafting through the corridors lately, and it isn’t just coming from the canteen. This term, students across all year groups have been immersing themselves in the world of culinary arts, taking their skills far beyond the mixing bowl.

Beyond the Kitchen with Katy

While our wonderful cooking teacher, Katy, has been guiding the children through the fundamentals of knife safety and heat control, the students have taken the baton and run with it. They haven't just been following recipes—they’ve been designing them.

The Ultimate Pasta Challenge

The highlight of the term has been our "Signature Pasta" project. Students were tasked with creating their own unique pasta dishes from scratch. This wasn't just about picking a sauce; the children looked at the "Farm to Fork" journey, considering every eventuality of their creation:

  • Sourcing: Discussing where seasonal ingredients come from and the importance of local farming.

  • Nutrition: Balancing proteins, carbohydrates, and "hidden veg" to create a healthy fuel source.

  • Aesthetics: Plating their dishes with an eye for colour and texture—true MasterChef style!

  • Costing: Our older students even considered the budget for their ingredients, ensuring their dishes were both delicious and sustainable.

Skills for Life

Cooking is one of the most vital life skills we can teach, fostering independence, fine motor skills, and even a bit of practical chemistry. Seeing the children's faces light up as they taste a sauce they designed themselves is a testament to their hard work and creativity.

We look forward to seeing (and smelling!) what our young chefs cook up next.
