PE and School Sport Funding

The government is determined to secure a significant and lasting legacy from the very successful 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games that were held in London.

In order to achieve this and improve the provision of PE and sport in primary schools, additional funding of £150 million per annum has been made available since 2014.

In our school this amounts to £16,000

At Co-op Academy Rathbone we believe that sport plays an important part as it contributes to the health and well-being of our children. Sporting excellence and participation, alongside strong cultural opportunities, go hand in hand with academic standards.

We have used the Sport Funding to purchase the gold membership of the Liverpool Schools Sports Partnership (£7,523), which alongside our own school actions has enabled us to strengthen and improve our provision in the following ways:

  • To hire  a specialist PE teacher/qualified sports coach to work alongside our teachers when teaching PE
  • To pay for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
  • To provide cover to release teachers for professional development in PE and sport
  • To attend sport competitions and increase pupils’ participation in school Games
  • To buy quality assured professional development modules /materials for PE and sport

A wide range of activities are delivered in school which aim to engage and inspire all children. We are also committed to ensure that all children receive at least 2 hours per week of high quality well-planned PE.

Over the year each child will participate in games, athletics and gymnastics lessons.

Opportunities are also planned for swimming in Years 4/5/6 (£6,500).  Our aim is that all children leave our school at the end of Year 6 able to swim 25 metres.

All pupils receive Outdoor and Adventurous Education via Forestry School and Educational visits to North Wales for example.
